It is becoming increasingly popular for people from the UK to take their own vehicles over to Europe, whether it is for a holiday, or an infamous beer and cigarette trip. Whilst it is quick and convenient, there are perhaps a couple of things that you should think about and organize before you leave.
Firstly, let's start with the obvious. Does your vehicle insurance cover you to drive in Europe? If it does not, you will need to contact your insurance company and have it modified for the period of time that you are in Europe.
Secondly, they drive on the right in Europe. Whilst that may seem pretty obvious, what it does mean, is that you will need to buy a conversion kit to have the angle of you vehicle headlights changed for driving on the opposite side. These come in a simple kit form, and are like stickers.
Another thing to consider, is that France has different driving rules. For example, every vehicle by law must carry a fire extinguisher, a high viz jacket for every person in the car and safety triangles. These laws change frequently, so you will need to look into them before you set off.
Finally, in Europe it is quite common to have on the spot fines for things such as speeding. Either carry enough cash to cover a fine, or better still, do not speed!
