Travel by rail:
Travel in sytle with transport from the future & the human factors behind the scenes keeping us safe.

The Lure of the Road

Many people have always dreamed of touring the UK or abroad in a caravan – but have always baulked at the price. You can expect to pay as much as £20,000 or even more for a decent specification caravan and this is simply outside of many people's budget.

And yet this form of transport is very attractive to many people, especially families, due to the flexibility and convenience that a caravan offers. It is, however, possible to buy used caravans at a much more reasonable price and if you choose carefully there is no reason why you should not be able to get a very good caravan for a very good price.

Some people choose to buy their used caravan through the private ads, and they are often cheaper than from dealerships, but they are bought as seen, and so there is no come back if anything goes wrong with the vehicle. (more...)

Drive Far and Wide

If you like driving, you might possibly think about some sort of driving job as a permanent career. It has both its benefits and disadvantages but one thing is for sure, it is pretty varied; and the umbrella term of driving as a profession covers all sorts of jobs from driving buses and coaches to train driving, taxi driving and even lorry driving.

When you see the car transporter manufacturers, don't you just wonder who drives these monsters? Someone does and this is just another slant on driving as a career. You have to decide what sort of vehicle you would prefer to drive and train accordingly – many of the driving jobs involve some sort of heavy goods driving licence, which costs money but can be an excellent investment.

If you are looking to go into a job that involves passengers you will have to take an additional passenger licence to prove that you are capable of safely transporting people as well as goods. (more...)

Get Me to the Church on Time!

The wedding planning process is a stressful one for most brides. There is so much to think about and so much to organise - including the wedding transport! All new brides want to make an impression as they arrive at the church and there are many options available.

Many brides opt for a limo service equipped with truck tracking such as a Rolls Royce or a stretch sedan. It is a classy and elegant way to travel to the church. Others like to turn up in a horse drawn cart – very rustic and absolutely stunning, but you take a chance with the weather!

A vintage bus or tram is also favoured by some, especially if there are many bridesmaids or page boys, as there will be enough room for everybody. (more...)

Every Boys Dream

So many boys dream that when they grow up they will become a train driver, an astronaut, a fireman or a truck driver! They play with cars and trucks when they are small and up to the age of six or seven they are absolutely obsessed with everything relating to transport.

They imagine themselves with train driver jobs and play the part in their fun and games. They love to play with train sets and racing cars. In fact this never goes away as they progress to Scalextrix when they are older! They still have that same obsession with transport and this theme continues throughout their life.

As they reach the age where they can drive, they actually get to drive their first car! This is the highlight of their teenage years as they finally get to live their dream. Many of them never actually go into careers where they get to drive trucks, planes or fire-engines but the fascination never leaves them. (more...)

Do Your Bit

Each and every one of us has something to contribute to the conservation and safekeeping of the environment. Whether we are taking our annual holiday to Spain to take clases de ingles para particulares or popping down the shops for a pint of milk, our mode of transport should always be of primary concern for us.

How many times do you take the car less than a kilometre to pick up a few items of groceries or get the kids from school? If we are honest with ourselves, probably too often. A little thought and a little planning would make you reconsider your mode of transport.

One strategy I use myself is little and often. Instead of a big weekly shop at an out of town store, I now try to cycle to a local co-op store ten minutes away whenever I need something. This means that I get at least some exercise most days and I am using the car less. (more...)

Life as a Bus Driver

Life as a bus driver is an interesting one but not necessarily an easy one. It can be incredibly stressful and tiring, especially on long journeys. Moreover, the people you are trying to help, the passengers, are often difficult and rude.

You have to have an unblemished driving record but it is still a fact of life that traffic accidents do happen, and you may end up needing the services of East Texas Lawyers. But that is a relatively small risk and should not deter you from entering this career.

It can be one of the most stressful jobs in the world when you have a schedule to keep to and there is bad traffic congestion. The passengers often blame you if the bus is late, even if you are frustrated yourself. (more...)

The Glamour of Old

Transport used to be more glamorous, it is a simple fact. If you look in the news archives at the type of transport that our grandparents used to use, it is obvious.

Nowadays we tend to put on a comfy tracksuit and a pair of trainers for a long journey, whereas they used to be dressed up to the nines!

Take driving as an example. Less than a century ago, when cars were just beginning to be popular, driving was a special occasion. OK, it may have been a rougher ride due to the technology, but going for a drive entailed dressing up in Sunday best and treating it as a day out. Even the shapes of the old cars, the Ford T and the Rolls Royce Phantom were elegant and classic. (more...)

Alternative Transport Means for Your Next Holiday

We have all enjoyed travelling by plane to destinations like Italy for a number of decades now and then booking appartements à Rome once we get there, but do we really get to enjoy the full value of exploring the changing landscapes as we travel there? The answer to this would have to be a resounding no!

Just for a change, why not consider booking rail travel across Europe instead. Okay, so this may be a far slower means of transport, but it will also be the best way to take in all of the different parts of the amazing continent of Europe as you go.

Flying is definitely the fastest way to get from A to B, there is no denying that fact. But it really does only allow you to see wherever you have travelled to and absolutely nothing in between. Rail travel really enables you to experience each and every country as you travel through them. (more...)

Living the Nomadic Life

Nomadic communities have existed for centuries. In fact, early humans were predominantly nomadic before they settled into an agrarian lifestyle. Agreed we have come a long way from our early ancestors, but some people prefer to live a nomadic lifestyle even today.

People with nomadic tendencies like moving around from place to place and prefer not to be bogged down in one place for too long. Clearly, transport is key to this kind of lifestyle since it involves a lot of moving. Things like caravans and portable homes come to mind.

Technology has made it so easy today to live life on the move. Even if you're practically living in a transportation pod, it is possible to work remotely. All other modern facilities like Satellite TV, internet etc. are highly portable now and can be accessed from anywhere. (more...)

Tips for Moving House

Moving isn't usually a treat for anyone. Especially if you have been living in the same place for a long time, it can be stressful and traumatic to leave and move somewhere else. All the sorting, packing, arranging transport and actually moving, can be nerve-racking. Here are some tips on packing and moving your home to someplace else.

Pack heavy things like books first. This means a substantial amount of the hard work is done in the beginning. Once packed, it is unwise to keep unpacking when you need things before you have moved. So keep some things especially kitchen utensils etc., handy to use before you move. Packing time is a good opportunity to get rid of things. Remember those boxes you haven't opened for so long you've forgotten what's in them? That's what I'm talking about!

Once you are packed, you need to arrange for transport to move. Moving vans are usually an affordable option of transport while shifting base. If you can drive, it makes sense to drive your own van. Load things in the van carefully, as you don't want to end up destroying your new HDTV Didgital Television or any other precious items. (more...)

Go Digital and Never look Back

Internet or phone? The choice of the old generation. There was a time when it was one or the other, but now with DSL (digital subscriber line) it's a decision that is in the dustbin of the past. For a continuous digital connection with the consistent bandwidth not available through broadband, this tried and trusted technology suits.

DSL Internet Prices for the typical consumer vary substantially running up to £30 a month but they do come with the benefit of having a constantly connected phone line. Some plans include substantial download limits, and a speed that competes with broadband even on a good day.

If you find a good supplier, take into account that getting setup will require a visit to your home from a professional. A good supplier will know the day and the time that they will be in your area; they will have a firm notion of the amount of time it takes for them to make home connections. Therefore you can avoid having to take the entire day off work in waiting for the DSL service provider to arrive by communicating well from the outset. (more...)

Make a Bicycle the Ideal Mode of Transport on Holiday

Cycling is a great way to achieve three things in a one go. Firstly, it is an excellent way to stay fit, secondly, it is an excellent way to reduce your carbon emissions and stay green and thirdly, it is an extremely cheap mode of transport. As we realise the irony of modern life and the ills associated with it, we start to see that in most cases, being eco-friendly is good for your health and also for your pocket.

Cycling as the primary mode of transport might not be feasible thanks to car centric planning of infrastructure. Cycling to work may seem farfetched, what with the distances and time commitments involved. Although given the increasing congestion on roads, it might one day be quicker to walk to work than drive there. But there is an occasion when cycling can be the ideal mode of transport for the entire family: on holiday!

Holidays can be the best time to use bicycles as your choice of transport. After all, there is no rush while you are on holiday and what better way to spend time with your family than exploring a new place? In fact, the concept of cycling holidays is already catching on as more and more people go on planned walking or Bicycle holidays in Europe (more...)

The End of the Black Cab?

Black cabs have been a familiar feature of the British transport system for many years. Also known as Hackney cabs, they are known throughout the country, from London to Aberdeen. Times are changing though, and now, there are other options to those current taxi drivers, or people thinking of becoming one.

Mercedes Benz have long been known for their high quality cars, vans and lorries, and now it is possible to buy a Mercedes vehicle that conforms to the Conditions of Fitness as set out in January 2007 by the PCO. What does this mean exactly? Basically, it means that there is now a high quality alternative to the Black Cab!

The Vito taxi offers all the comfort for up to six passengers that you would expect from a Mercedes, whilst bristling with safety features which meet and exceed the standards set for Hackney cabs. If you are looking at investing in a vehicle which will last you many years of reliable service then this is the one! (more...)

The Aviation Industry Needs You!

The transport industry has undergone some hard times recently, particularly in the aviation industry. With strikes, delays due to the Icelandic volcano and European fines, some of the top airlines are finding that their golden days have gone.

Whilst this is not such good news for the aviation industry, it is, however, pretty good news for the consumer. With the airlines now competing legitimately for customers, as opposed to fixing prices, cheap flight deals now abound for the savvy person who knows where to look.

Many of the airlines have websites of their own, and on there, you can see if there are any deals current or in the pipeline. Sometimes, it is just a matter of delaying your travel by a day or so, and you can save quite a substantial sum of money. In addition, by taking flights at more unsocial hours, you may again find that they are cheaper. (more...)

Taking a Vehicle to Europe

It is becoming increasingly popular for people from the UK to take their own vehicles over to Europe, whether it is for a holiday, or an infamous beer and cigarette trip. Whilst it is quick and convenient, there are perhaps a couple of things that you should think about and organize before you leave.

Firstly, let's start with the obvious. Does your vehicle insurance cover you to drive in Europe? If it does not, you will need to contact your insurance company and have it modified for the period of time that you are in Europe.

Secondly, they drive on the right in Europe. Whilst that may seem pretty obvious, what it does mean, is that you will need to buy a conversion kit to have the angle of you vehicle headlights changed for driving on the opposite side. These come in a simple kit form, and are like stickers. (more...)

Drive to Italy Rather than Fly

If you are thinking about a holiday to Italy, then there are a couple of ways that you can get there. You can fly, of course, which will give you more time to see the sites of the country, but you could also opt to drive.

By travelling in your own vehicle, you would get the chance to see other countries along the way, and also would have more independence when you arrives in Italy. This would give you the chance to stay in small villages, stay in a family run albergo and really get to see a side to Italy that many people do not.

If driving from the UK, you would need to remember that in Europe, they drive on the right hand side. This means that not only should you prepare for this mentally, but also, that you must buy a kit which will change the direction your front lights shine. (more...)

Setting a Good Impression

If you travel abroad on business and wish to set a good impression for prospective clients, or you just prefer to travel in better luxury than a normal taxi can provide, the you may wish to think of an alternative form of transport.

In the Toronto area, for example, GPS Tracking is available in a range of vehicles which would be more than suitable for your needs. From picking you up at the airport, to driving around the Greater Toronto Area, it would certainly take the hassle out of trying to arrange your own transportation.

The beauty of using a company such as this, is that they are extremely flexible and can cater for your needs. For example, whilst an airport pick up would command a one-off fee, it would also be possible to hire a car and driver for the duration of your stay. (more...)

Transporting Belongings To The Continent

When considering a move from the UK to another country, one of the main things to organise, in a physical sense, is the transportation of belongings. This used to be quite a complicated process, due to legal paperwork, but now, it is not so difficult.

Those remaining difficulties are solved completely when using a removal firm to transport household goods to the continent. For example, if moving to Spain, a quick Google around the term removal UK to Spain will reveal a number of firms all willing to do the job.

When using a removal firm, there are a few things to think about, in terms of what services they offer that are best for you. The main consideration, is that your belongings should be insured at all times through the transportation process. A good removal firm will be able to tell you this. (more...)

The Motorways of Today

The motorways of today are quite literally full of traffic, from private cars and motorbikes to vans and transporters full of Cars for sale and there is no sign of the level of traffic abating. Indeed it seems that our motorways get busier year on year as more families have multiple cars, especially on some of the more popular motorways.

And yet very few of our motorways are toll motorways and the vast majority of them are still free of charge to travellers which begs the question, why do we not consider charging for them, or at least some of them, as many of our European neighbours do.

It seems like common sense, as it would have the dual effect of encouraging people to share cars to save money or to take the bus as well as raising more money to ensure ongoing maintenance and improvement work on the infrastructure. (more...)

Negotiating Crowded Public Transport

If you are no stranger to public transport, you'll know that on special occasion days, you have to put up with extremely crowded conditions. At times, it's easier to find young drivers car insurance than it is to get a seat on the bus or train, and this can really put a spanner in the way the day gets going.

In order to avoid long waits and overcrowding on public transport during big sports matches or political events, it is necessary to follow certain guidelines. With the help of a few simple strategies, you'll be able to miss the crush and get to your destination on time.

To begin with, you should go online and do some research. If you know of a big event that will cause major public transport congestion, use the internet to check out where the delays are going to be worse. From here, you'll be equipped to make an alternative plan. (more...)

Cutting Costs In The Transport Industry

The transport industry has undergone several years of suffering now due to the rapidly increasing costs of fuel, and also the introduction of more and more rules and regulations. Whether it is a Cross Country Car shipping company, or a refrigerated food transport company, it is essential to keep costs down wherever possible.

Cost cutting in the transport industry can take many forms. The main expenses are fuel, wages and of course the vehicles themselves. When it comes to fuel, there are many ways to cut costs and therefore increase profitability.

One of the simplest ways, is to cut down the vehicles idling time where the engine is left running. One national company monitored their vehicles, and across their fleet now saves fifty thousand pounds a year by requiring drivers to turn off the engines whilst the vehicle is not in use. Simple but effective. (more...)
